Lonely Planet review for Gautam

Situated opposite the Burmese Vihara is this basic semi-tent affair with a sit-out garden. It offers a standard travellers menu and the banana pancakes are the best in town.

As the Lonely Planet review may indicate with its use of terms like "basic" and standard," you shouldn't expect too much in the way of new or exciting culinary experiences here (unless, of course, Gautam's happens to be the first place you eat during your stay in India). But, to be frank, new or exciting probably shouldn't be the main criteria you use when making decisions about your tent dining experience. Its faux-Chinese food (a sometimes surprisingly common staple of pilgrim/traveler cuisine in Bodh Gaya) doesn't exactly scream "delicious," and perhaps its omelets are on the bland side, but, the green chili sauce offered in abundant supply can remedy both of those problems, and, in my humble opinion, its service is the quickest of the three tent restaurants across from the Burmese Vihar. More importantly, though, the food seems to be the safest. Food poisoning is a pretty obvious threat to any Western belly in India, but Gautam does a good job keeping his customers safe from it. And on that note, Gautam (the chubby guy in glasses at the front of the restaurant) is a both a pretty nice guy and a trustworthy travel agent if you need to book a jeep/train from Bodh Gaya/Gaya to anywhere else in India.
