History
The Széchenyi family's public-spiritedness started with patriarch Ferenc, who donated his entire collection of books and objets d'art to the state in 1802, laying the foundations for the National Library now named in his honour. But it was his son, István (1791-1860), who made the greatest impact of any Hungarian on the economic and cultural development of the nation.
