    Firewatch Tower

    The best place to begin a tour of Sopron is to climb the 200 steps of the narrow circular staircase to the top of the 60m-high Firewatch Tower at the northern end of Fő tér. The tower affords excellent views over the city, the Lővér Hills to the southwest and the Austrian Alps to the west, as well as Fő tér below and the four narrow streets that make up the Inner Town.

    The tower, from which trumpeters would warn of fire, mark the hour (now done by chimes and tinny music) and greet visitors to the city in the Middle Ages, is a true architectural hybrid.     Misina Peak

    To the northwest of Pécs, up Fenyves sor and past the zoo, a winding road leads to Misina Peak and a TV tower, an impressive 194m structure with a viewing platform and café-bar. But these are just the foothills: from here, trails lead to the lovely towns of Orfű and Abaliget, on a plateau 15km and 20km to the northwest, respectively; and to Southern Transdanubia's highest peak, Zengő-hegy (682m).

    Demetrius Tower

    The Romanesque Demetrius Tower in Dóm tér is the city's oldest structure, and is all that remains of a church erected here in the 12th century.

    The octagonal wooden Clock Tower is a lot older than it looks. It was designed by Fellner in 1763, and once housed the town's tiny prison.
