Seafood restaurants in Hungary

  1. A

    Óceán Bár & Grill

We’d like to say this place has made quite a splash in Budapest but we’re afraid we’d be arrested by the pun police. Still, it’s making waves with its fresh seafood sourced from Scandinavia, congenial decor and wonderful fishmonger and delicatessen (enter from Régiposta utca; open from 10am to 9pm Tuesday to Saturday). We’ll come back for the seafood linguine (4690Ft) and the boiled lobster (2650Ft per 100g), but we do wish they’d remove that aquarium (or at least the Nemo residing therein).

    Régi Hídhoz

Some believe Hídhoz serves comparable fish dishes to its neighbour Halászcsárda, a Szeged institution that knows how to prepare the best fish in town, which is saying something. The atmosphere here is, however, more relaxed and family-orientated.

    Pityer

One and a half kilometres southwest of Fő tér, this traditional halászcsárda (restaurant serving fish dishes) is worth the trip if you're in search of fish. Portions are large and the surrounds are quite atmospheric.

    Kiskőrösy

Housed in a traditional fisherman's cottage on the banks of the Tisza a few kilometres east of the centre, this excellent fish restaurant is an atmospheric place to dine. Check with Tourinform on its opening times.

  5. Halászkert

This place serves some of the best korhely halászlé (drunkard's fish soup) in Hungary on its large, shaded terrace. If that's not your style, there's plenty of other fish dishes to choose from.

  6. Halászkert

If you can't make it up the hill to Kisfaludy and are looking for a range of fish dishes to choose from, head here. It may be crowded and touristy at times, but the food is top-rate.

  7. Tokaj

Next door to the hotel of the same name, Tokaj is a simple restaurant with a good fish selection and open terrace; it may be the only place open if you're dining after 21:00.

  8. Halászcsárda

Facing the canal, this place offers the usual fishy dishes in pleasant surroundings and is only a short walk from most hotels and the centre.

  9. Róna

Róna has more than enough fish dishes to satisfy Poseidon and a smattering of more common fare as an afterthought.

  10. Halásztanya

At the foot of Avas Hill, this relaxed place specialises in fish dishes and has a larger than normal terrace.

    Balaton

This cool, leafy oasis amid all the hubbub is set back from the lake in a shaded park area. It serves huge portions and, like so many restaurants in town, has an extensive fish selection.
