    Orthodox Synagogue

    Two houses of worship attest to the large communities of Greeks and Jews who once called Miskolc their home. To the southeast stands the large and, as per the norm, crumbling Orthodox Synagogue, designed in 1861 by Ludwig Förster, architect of the Great Synagogue in Budapest.

  2. Orthodox Ecclesiastical Museum

    A guide will escort you to the Orthodox Ecclesiastical Museum near the main gate. Look out for the Black Madonna of Kazan, presented to the church by Catherine the Great, and the jewel-encrusted Mt Athos Cross, brought to Miskolc by Greek settlers in the 18th century.

    Take a stroll up leafy Avas Hill; the best approach is via Mélyvölgy utca, off Papszer utca, or Földes Ferenc utca, off Mindszent tér. Veer to the right along the narrow lane past some of the more than 800 wine cellars cut into the limestone.

    Two houses of worship attest to the large communities of Greeks and Jews who once called Miskolc their home. The Hungarian Orthodox Church, a splendid late-baroque structure, has an iconostasis (1793) that is 16m high with 88 icons.

    The Ottó Herman Museum, south of the city centre, has one of Hungary's richest collections of Neolithic finds (many from the Bükk region), good ethnographical and mineral collections, and an exhibit of fine art.

    Stages plays and other performances in a new purpose-built theatre behind the original theatre (built 1857), where the beloved 19th-century actress Róza Széppataki Déryné once walked the floorboards.

    In a cemetery below the hill is the large Gothic Avas Calvinist Church, with a painted wooden interior (1410). The bell tower dates from the mid-16th century. The key is in the parish office at Papszer utca 14.

    The Calvinist Plank Church is a 1938 replica of a 17th-century Transylvanian-style wooden church. It has been completely rebuilt and renovated after being badly damaged by fire in 1997.

    There are also performances at the Sándor Rónai Cultural Centre. The Hungarian Orthodox church and Orthodox synagogue are sometimes used for opera concerts.
