Introducing Miskolc
Miskolc, Hungary's third-largest city, is a sprawling metropolis ringed by refineries, abandoned factories and cardboard-quality housing blocks. So why come to this 'capital of the rust belt'? For one thing, its location at the foot of the Bükk Hills makes it an ideal place to start a trek or walk into the national park. The thermal waters of nearby Miskolctapolca are among the most effect- ive in Hungary, and the western suburb of Diósgyőr boasts a well-preserved castle.

A relatively affluent mining and steel-making town under the socialist regime, Miskolc was hit harder than most by the collapse of heavy industry here in the early 1990s.
