Getting there & away
With Gyula lying on an unimportant rail spur, buses are the preferred mode of transport. There are dozens each day departing for Békéscsaba (241Ft, 30 minutes, 15km) and three go to Debrecen (1690Ft, three hours, 130km). Other destinations include Budapest (2780Ft, four to six hours, 230km, two daily), Kecskemét (1820Ft, 3¼ hours, 145km, two daily), Szeged (1820Ft, 3½ hours, 145km, seven daily), and Vésztő (484Ft, 1¼ hours, 35km, three daily).
Some 17 trains daily run west on line 128, Gyula's link to the Békéscsaba-Szolnok- Budapest train line. Travelling north on this poky line will get you to Vésztő (430Ft, 1¼ hours, 50km), Szeghalom and eventually to Püspökladány, where you can change trains for Debrecen (1624Ft, 3½ hours, 150km).
