Some 12 daily buses link Budapest with Balassagyarmat via Vác (968Ft, 1¾ hours, 76km). There is one daily bus to Gyöngyös (907Ft, 2¼ hours, 72km), and plenty to Salgótarján via Litke or Endrefalva (665Ft, 1¼ hours, 52km). Nine buses go daily to Szécsény on Monday to Friday and three or four daily on the weekend (241Ft, 25 minutes, 18km); Szécsény is the place to change for Hollókő. There are three buses daily Monday to Saturday to Hont (363Ft, 50 minutes, 28km) on the Slovakian border at 6am, 11.50am and 4.50pm.

Balassagyarmat can be reached throughout the day via a snaking train line from Vác (658Ft). The trip takes over two hours; the bus will cut that time in half. If coming from Budapest (1212Ft, 2½ hours, 110km) or the east by train, change at Aszód.
