Live Music entertainment in Hungary

  1. A

    Szimpla

This distressed-looking, very unflashy place remains one of the most popular drinking venues south of VI Liszt Ferenc tér, with live music Tuesday to Thursday evenings.

  2. B

    Laser Theatre

At the Planetarium in Népliget, the Laser Theatre has a mixed bag of video (some 3-D) concerts with laser and canned music featuring the likes of Madonna, Pink Floyd, Queen, Mike Oldfield, Vangelis and Enigma, as well as performances by Carmina Burana. Kind of low tech and old hat but fun in a retro kind of way.

    A38 Hajó

Moored on the Buda side just south of Petőfi Bridge, the A38 is a decommissioned Ukrainian stone hauler ship from 1968 that has been recycled as a major live-music venue. It’s so cool it’s hot in summer and the hold, well, rocks throughout the year.

  4. D

    Wigwam Rock Club

This place is one of the best venues of its kind and hosts some big-name Hungarian rock and blues bands on Friday and Saturday in deepest south Buda. A new branch called WigWam 2 unfortunately keeps the tacky ‘cowboy and injun’ theme (dead or) alive.

  5. E

    Gödör

The ‘Pit’, a city-sponsored cultural centre in the old bays below Erzsébet tér in central Pest where international buses used to drop off and pick up passengers, is a real mixed bag, offering everything from folk and world but especially rock and pop.

    Fonó Buda Music House

This place has táncház programs several times a week at 8pm as well as concerts by big-name bands throughout each month; it’s one of the best venues in town for this sort of thing. Consult the website for more details.

    Genius

Genius is arguably the best bar outside Budapest. Its dark red interior, lounge chairs, sexy sounds and excellent cocktails combine to create a decadent air, all of which is topped off by the occasional live music act.

    Petőfi Csarnok

In the southeast corner of City Park, Budapest’s main youth centre is this 1250-seat venue for smaller rock concerts (eg Jethro Tull) as the hall is intimate enough to get really close to the performers.

  9. I

    Banya Café Bar

This impressive basement (bánya means 'mine'), a former workers' pub, has been dragged into the 21st century and wouldn't look out of place in London. There are parties and live music on weekends.

  10. J

    Old Man’s Music Pub

Not just jazz and blues, but swing and Latino and even rap, this fab venue has live music nightly from 9pm to 11pm. DJs then take over and dancing continues till dawn. It’s a major party place.

This purpose-built 12,500-seat arena named after local pugilist László Papp is where big local and international acts (eg James Blunt, Beyoncé) perform.

    Wigwam 2

A new branch of Wigwam, it unfortunately keeps the tacky ‘cowboy and injun’ theme (dead or) alive. It hosts some big-name Hungarian rock and blues bands.

    Dante Café

Occupying the ground floor of the Csontváry Museum, this is a good place to meet local students. It has a huge garden and occasionally live music.

  15. N

    Kisstadion

This venue is smaller than the nearby Budapest Sportaréna and thus something of an elephants' graveyard (think, Rod Stewart) for international acts.
