Budapest Restaurants

Italian restaurants in Budapest

  1. A

    Fausto

Still the most upmarket (and expensive) Italian restaurant in town, Fausto has brilliant pasta dishes, daily specials and desserts; there are lots of choices for vegetarians. The yellow walls and antique furniture provide an elegant touch and the Italian wine selection is huge. It remains one of the most pleasant dining experiences in Budapest.

    Marxim

A short walk – naturally – from Moscow Sq, this odd place is a hang-out for teens who have added a layer of their own graffiti to the Communist memorabilia and kitsch, a joke that is now two decades old and kinda not funny. OK, we all know Stalin szuksz, but it’s still a curiosity for those who appreciate the Kremlin, ÁVO, Yuri Gagarin, Red October pizzas and the campy Stalinist decor. It also serves not-often-seen lepények (pies stuffed with meat or cheese; 650Ft to 920Ft).

    Marcello

A perennial favourite with students from the nearby university since it opened almost two decades ago, this father-and-son-owned operation just down the road from XI Gellért tér offers reliable Italian fare at affordable prices. The salad bar (small/large 980/680Ft) is good value and the lasagne (1200Ft) is legendary in these parts.

  4. Donatella’s Kitchen

Black is apparently the new black at this uber-trendy New York–style restaurant directed by Italian chef Donatella Zampoli. The service might be a bit attitudinous and the chandeliers made of (plastic) antlers a bit scary but we'll come back for the excellent pizzas (around 2000Ft), more substantial Italian mains and stylish crowd.

    Trattoria Toscana

Hard by the Danube, this trattoria serves rustic and very authentic Italian and Tuscan food, including pasta e fagioli (890Ft), a hearty soup of beans and fresh pasta, and a wonderful Tuscan farmer’s platter (2350Ft) of prepared meats. The pizza and pasta dishes (1650Ft to 3890Ft) are excellent too.

    Gastronomia Pomo D’oro

Next door to a much more extravagant (and expensive) trattoria bearing the same name, this Italian delicatessen/caterer has a small dining area on the 1st floor where you can choose from a small selection of dishes or sample cheese and prepared meats by the 100g measure (490Ft to 890Ft). Excellent value.

  7. F

    Pink Cadillac

More of an upbeat 1950s diner than a pizzeria, the recently redecorated Pink Cadillac still reigns supreme on IX Ráday utca after all this time. If you don’t like the surrounds, have your pizza delivered to Paris Texas, the pub next door and not some one-horse town in the Lone Star State.

    Okay Italia

This perennially popular eatery is run by Italians and does serve a full range of dishes but most people come for the pasta and pizza. There is a much classier (and more expensive) Pest branch up the ring road opposite the Nyugati train station.

    Vapiano

A very welcome addition to the Inner Town is this pizza and pasta bar where everything is prepared on-site. You’ll be in and out in no time but the taste will certainly linger. It caters mostly to office workers in the centre.
