Budapest

Indian restaurants in Budapest

  1. A

    Shalimar

Here since forever, Shalimar serves tandoori, tikka and kebab dishes from an open kitchen that taste like they’ve come via southern Hungary (there’s got to be paprika in there somewhere) rather than the subcontinent, but at least it’s a fix when you need it most. We’re told the chef’s from Nepal, which may explain the hybrid tastes. Still the mutton biryani (2190Ft) is a force to be reckoned with and the choice of vegetarian dishes (1050Ft to 1750Ft) is plentiful.

  2. B

    Salaam Bombay

If you’re hankering for a fix of authentic curry or tandoori in a bright, upbeat environment, look no further than this attractive eatery just east of Roosevelt tér. Don’t believe us? Even staff from the Indian embassy are said to come here regularly. As would be expected, there’s a large choice of vegetarian dishes (950Ft to 1990Ft).

    Maharaja

This Óbuda institution was the first Indian restaurant to open in Budapest. It specialises in northern Indian dishes, especially tandoori (1600Ft to 4300Ft). It’s never been the best subcontinental eatery in town, but it does manage some kick-ass samosas. There’s a branch called City Maharaja in Pest’s Erzsébetváros.

    Kama Sutra

This new arrival is a welcome one indeed: decent curries and tandoor dishes in upbeat surrounds in the very heart of town. Try the samosas and chicken vindaloo. It's definitely a cut above the usual curry-house atmosphere and the perfect place for a meal before moving on for the evening.
