Lonely Planet review for Új Sípos Halászkert

This lovely, very traditional restaurant faces (and, in the warmer weather, has outside seating in) Óbuda’s most beautiful and historic square. Try the signature halászlé (fish soup; 1100Ft to 2200Ft), which comes in various guises. As the restaurant’s motto puts it so succinctly: Halászlében verhetetlen (You can’t beat fish soup).

Halászlében verhetetlen (You can’t beat fish soup) TRUTH!

    mchosue recommends this,

I have lived here a year and have never had a better fish soup than I have here! I have been back several times just to try their various incarnations of it, too. That's 7 kinds of distinct fish soup from one place, all delicious. I cannot tell you how many Hungarians I have brought here who have been impressed by the soup, either. Well, yes, I can.

    All of them.

Every single one of them has remarked on how good the various soups are. Some have argued about other restaurants being better, but this is quickly put aside after a few sips of soup. "I did not know," one said. "I have been mocking you because you like this place so much."

Mind you, I hadn't known he had been mocking me. Mind you also that I kind of mind that he was, as he was one of my first friends here.

I should have written about Új Sípos Halászkert before, but seeing the review from Frank when I decided to look at Budapest here finally spurred me on. I agree with him on ALL points, and I will also try the sturgeon (which I have confirmed is a winter thing).

I will make a not here for everyone. Try their Csülkös karaj (cheese stuffed smoked pork chops) or even better, their Hungarian Surf' N' Turf. Amazing. I will vouch for the steaks in general, as I have tried four so far, all perfectly done...

Good for: gourmet food, a good steak, diner with friends or family, Hungarian cuisine, fish soup, halászlé, luxury dining

Not good for: fast dinner, a cheap meal, Babies - small children

Amazing, Authentic, Hungarian Luxury For A Perfect Date

    frankinbudapest recommends this,

I spent days looking for the best fish place in Budapest. Why? Because my girlfriend is a avowed "fish-and-veggies only" eater and we were visiting for a bit of a break. I was wowed.

I am difficult to please when it comes to fish and seafood in general because I am of Portuguese descent and was raised on my own and Hawaiian cuisine that incorporates it. But the food experience at Új Sípos Halászkert was one of the best I have had in a restaurant, bar none. I recommend you call for a reservation. They are often full, it would seem.

Our visit began with a truly impressive wine list and my girlfriend diving in head-first with the local Hungarian favorite, fish soup. I selected a Caesar salad that was obviously made fresh and true to the original Tijuana recipe (I am from San Diego, so I definitely know). We were served quickly and efficiently, and the service was not overly aggressive or intrusive.

Our waiter was attentive and carried himself with the air of a man with a profession. It was as if we had stepped back to a time when the occupation was reserved for highly trained professionals, and not for cheap collegiate temporary workers. Refreshing, full of suggestions when probed, and otherwise only solicitous of our satisfaction. Bravo! He appeared to not be the exception, from my observations of the other staff...

My sturgeon dish was perfectly cooked and delicious. I will only say that I had never tried this Russian-sourced fish, but am glad that I did. The flesh was golden, not fishy, and very hearty. I recommend that you ask the wait staff for recommendations on your garnishes, as they vary with the season. I am also not sure that this fish is always on the menu, so check beforehand.

My girlfriend's main course was a delicious vegetarian risotto dish, which, like her fish soup, impressed me very much. It was based on a white wine and parmesan sauce. She was quite stingy with sharing it, though I had been generous with my sturgeon. Amazing!

Dessert was cottage cheese dumplings with sweet sour cream and blueberry mousse, along with a small fruit salad drizzled in honey and cinnamon. We shared and accompanied it with another bottle of wine.

We received a visit from the owner at the end of our meal and before we paid, as well as his very nice wife. They made sure we were happy and wished us well with a toast. It was probably one of the friendliest and yet luxurious meals I have had while traveling, and I was pleased to discover it was owned by a family.

We were informed that the restaurant had stood for 400 years (!) and that the city center, right outside the doors, was usually open in the summer with tables for the restaurant goers. We needed no such accommodations ourselves, but if you visit in warmer months, al fresco dining is on offer.

This was likely the best place we could have picked for our "big night" in Budapest. It was romantic, surprising, delicious luxurious and well worth the price. Five stars all the way!

A small note: we left with a brochure, detailing rooms they had available for events and for receptions. I can see a business lunch here being very productive, and in the summer months, the charming interior married with the town square outside would be amazing, according tot the girlfriend. Fingers crossed!

Good for: fish, Romantic dinner, Dates, Excellent service, reception, luxury eating, meetings over lunch, Hungarian cuisine, company parties

Not good for: a cheap meal
