  1. A

    Auguszt Cukrászda

Tucked away behind the Fény utca market and Mammut shopping mall, this is the original Auguszt cafe (there are newer branches) and only sells its own shop-made cakes (200Ft to 500Ft), pastries and biscuits. There’s limited seating on the 1st floor.

  2. B

    Lukács Cukrászda

This cafe is dressed up in the finest of decadence – all mirrors and gold – with soft piano music in the background. The selection of cakes (450Ft to 1250Ft) is excellent but expensive. Must be because the chief pâtissier has come all the way from France.

    Fröhlich Cukrászda

This kosher cake shop and cafe in the former ghetto, dating back to 1953, makes and sells old Jewish favourites (180Ft to 350Ft) like flódni (a three-layer cake with apple, walnut and poppy-seed fillings) as well as holiday sweets: for Purim there is kindli (cookies with nuts or poppy seeds) and hamentaschen (‘pocket’ biscuits filled with nuts and poppy seeds or apricot jam); and for Rosh Hashanah, lekach (honey and nut pastry).

    Mokka

It's 'ethno-cuisine' here, with a mishmash of dishes; you'll need a map to read the menu. But we love the space and the great African decor, plus there's a good wine list. The three-course set menu, including wine, is very good value.

    Daubner Cukrászda

It may seem quite a journey for your Sachertorte and you can only stand and nibble on the hoof here, but Daubner gets rave reviews from locals and expats alike as the best shop for cakes (250Ft to 400ft) in Buda.

    Art Nouveau Café

This small but comfortable cafe on the ground floor of delightful Bedő House is tailor-made for fans of the Secessionist style. The cakes (290Ft to 370Ft) are pretty average though.

    Szalai Cukrászda

This humble cake shop in Lipótváros just north of parliament probably has the best cherry strudel (from 310Ft) in the capital, though its cream cakes also go down a treat.
