Lonely Planet review

Though it bears the stigma of being 'just another chain hotel', the 247-room Béke (or 'Peace') Hotel has several things in its favour: a very central location on the larger of Budapest's two main ring roads, a lovely Eclectic building dating from 1914 and great health facilities.

The lobby (all marble, gold pilasters, stained glass and Secessionist-style lamps) attempts to recreate the outside within and it succeeds; it's a cool and classy oasis just off busy Teréz körút. The use of stained glass throughout, even as objects d'art in the corridors, also helps set the mood. Indeed, though the public areas have not been renovated for nearly two decades, you would hardly know it. Rooms facing the ring road are quiet thanks to double glazing but choose one closer to the top (the 8th) floor just to be sure. Bathrooms are disappointingly small but you can always head down to the positively huge swimming pool in the basement.
