History
Siguatepeque was founded by Spanish colonists in 1689 as a center for religious and monastic training. Some of the vows were evidently optional though, as the town’s population grew quickly from the extensive intermixing of colonists and Lencans. The name Siguatepeque reportedly means ‘town of beautiful women’ in Nahuatl, which may have had something to do with it.
