History
Since the early 1700s, Santa Rosa has been key to the region’s prosperity because of its tobacco production. In 1765 the Spanish crown chose the town as the site of La Real Factoría del Tabaco, a government office responsible for setting tobacco prices, marketing the product and distributing the seeds and equipment necessary for its production. This official presence helped to market the region’s cash crop even more, which in turn increased the wealth of this city. It became such an economic force, in fact, that by 1812 Santa Rosa de Copán was declared the capital of what is now the Lempira department. Today, although the department capital has moved to Gracias, Santa Rosa remains a strong presence in the tobacco industry; cigars produced here are considered among the best in the country and, some say, the world.
