Getting around
Bus
It is not recommended you use local public buses. Petty crime is common, and even gang members have taken to boarding public buses and ‘collecting’ from everyone on board. This happens mainly in outlying neighborhoods (and almost never on intercity buses) but most travelers won’t know when the area has turned from good to bad.

Rental car rates average US$50 per day, more for a 4WD vehicle, less for an economy car or for longer-term rentals. If your credit card offers rental insurance, you may be able to save US$5 to US$12 per day by declining the insurance provided by the rental agency. Not all agencies allow this, but it’s worth trying. Be sure to ask about the deductible (the amount of damages you have to cover before insurance kicks in) as it can be as high as US$1600. Airport desks are open daily, but renting there usually costs 10% to 15% more than in town.

Local transport
Taxi
Private taxis cruise all over town, giving a little honk to advertise when they are available. A ride in town costs around US$2. There is also a system of colectivo taxis (collective taxis) which operate essentially like a bus, following a fixed route and carrying multiple passengers. Convenient routes include those to the airport, Suyapa and the bus stops for Valle de Ángeles or Danlí. The fare is typically around US$0.50.
