Land
Bus
Direct buses to La Ceiba (US$2.50, 1½ hours) don’t enter Tela proper; instead, take a taxi to the Dippsa gasoline station on the highway, where buses from San Pedro Sula on the way to La Ceiba pass every 30 to 45 minutes. Alternatively, ordinary buses to La Ceiba (US$1.60, 2½ hours) leave from the second-class bus terminal on 9a Calle NE every 25 minutes from 4am to 6pm.
Transportes Tela Express (2a Av NE) operates direct buses to San Pedro Sula (US$3, 1½ to two hours) from its terminal a block past the train tracks; departures are at 6am, 7am, 8am, 10am, 12:30pm and 2pm Monday to Saturday and at 7am, 8am, 10:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm and 5:30pm on Sunday.
Buses to various Garífuna villages leave from a dirt lot at the corner of 8a Av NE and 11a Calle NE. Buses go to Triunfo de la Cruz (US$0.50, 30 minutes) and continue to La Ensenada (US$0.75, 45 minutes) hourly from 9am to 5pm (until 4pm only on Sunday). Buses to San Juan (US$0.45, 25 minutes) and Tornabé (US$0.50, 30 minutes) leave from the same lot on roughly the same schedule.
Buses to Jardín Botánico Lancetilla leave from the corner of 6a Av NE and 11a Calle NE.
Garífuna Tours (448 2904; www.garifunatours.com; 9a Calle at 5a Ave), half a block from parque central, runs shuttles from Tela to San Pedro Sula city and airport (per person US$15), La Ceiba city and airport (per person US$15), and Copán Ruínas (per person US$39). There’s no fixed schedule, but at least three people are required to make a trip. Advance reservations are required; there’s an additional cost for travel at night.
Train
The passenger train between Tela and Puerto Cortés no longer operates.
