Dangers & annoyances
Crime against tourists is rare in La Ceiba. Police patrol the center of town and the Zona Viva, and travelers have little reason to wander into the less-secure neighborhoods. That said, La Ceiba is the country’s third-largest city and you should take the same common-sense precautions you would in any urban area. The Zona Viva is safe overall, but has its fair share of drugs, prostitutes and pickpockets. Fights break out now and then, and some tourists have been hassled by local drunks. Consider taking a cab home at the end of the night. The beach is also unsafe at night.
