Lonely Planet review for Proyecto Lingüístico Quetzalteco de Español

This very professional and politically minded school also runs the Escuela de la Montaña, a language school with a maximum enrollment of eight on an organic coffee finca in the mountains near Xela, where participation in local culture and volunteering are strongly encouraged.

outstanding language immersion program plus much more

    scgmom recommends this,

I spent four weeks at PLQ, on the recommendation of an American living in Guatemala. There are many language schools in Xela, and I'm sure many are good, but what makes this one outstanding are the following:

    * the school was founded by people with a strong social conscience, and the teachers and staff are well paid, well treated, have benefits and in general are not exploited in any way. Some schools, for instance, only pay the teacher if the student shows up, and therefore can be obliged to make up lessons at random hours in order to be paid. Few pay teachers any benefits like health insurance.

    * In addition to the high quality teachers, many activities are offered during the week and over the weekend that provide an opportunity to learn about and experience many different things. When I was there, we had presentations from a local weaving cooperative, a coffee plantation, weekly local news reports, detailed history of Guatemala, as well as a weekly pickup futbol game, trips to hot springs and hikes to several beautiful Mayan destinations, a recylced glass factory and more. There is also a movie night with interesting related films, cooking lessons, etc.

    * It is possible to spend a week or more at the Mountain School located in a very rural area in the midst of coffee country. The students sleep at the school but eat with local families, and can help with community activities. When I was there , a referendum was being held on mining and we learned a great deal and attended the referendum with our cameras as witnesses to protect against corruption.

    * The school attracts a wide variety of ages and types of people as students, which makes it very dynamic and interesting, because each week there is a sort of instant community that forms.
