  1. A

    Monoloco

An old-time tourist hangout (take that as a recommendation or a warning), this place serves up a good blend of comfort foods and local dishes, as well as ice-cold beers in a relaxed environment.

  2. B

La Fonda de la Calle Real

This restaurant with three spacious branches, all in appealing colonial style, has a good, varied menu ranging from generous salads and sandwiches to grilled meats. The specialty caldo real, a hearty chicken soup, makes a good meal. This branch is the most attractive of the three, with several rooms and patios. Other branches are located at 5a Av Norte 5 and 5a Av Norte 12. The 5a Av Norte 12 branch is a little cheaper than the others.

  3. C

    La Peña de Sol Latino

With good, cheap and innovative food and free live music nightly, this little indoor-outdoor place is fast becoming one of the hottest bar-restaurants in town. Get there early for a good table.

  4. Restaurante Las Calas

An artistic sort of place with lilies growing in the patio and lily-themed art on the walls (and a gallery in the back), Las Calas serves good medium-priced meals. Satisfying portions of chicken, fish or beef are creatively prepared and served with a unique salsa picante. This restaurant also features cheaper vegetarian dishes and a daily regional specialty.

  5. D

    Casa de San Juan

The San Juan is one of the few eateries in town with style - art on the walls and the tables themselves, jugs of lilies, wrought-iron chairs - and its food is great too, ranging from burgers and tortillas to homemade cakes and more-traditional dishes. There are balcony tables overlooking the market and live music some nights.

  6. E

    Del Paseo

This spacious, artsy, Mediterranean-style bistro is one of Cuatro Grados Norte's most popular spots. Relaxed jazz plays in the background unless there's a live band (try Thursdays from 21:00). You might select roast chicken breast with tropical fruits and grated coconut - or spinach-and-ricotta filo pastry parcels?

  7. F

    Café Sagrado Corazón

This is an excellent place for Guatemalan home cooking. Regional specialties such as pepian and jocom are often on the menu, but there's always fried chicken and grilled beef as fallbacks. Meals are truly filling, coming with soup, tamalitos, rice, potatoes, avocado and salad.

  8. G

    Cuevita de las Urquizas

Sumptuous tipico food is the draw here, all kept warming in earthenware pots out front - a very dirty trick as the smells wafting out are impossible to go past. Hugely popular with locals, it's worth getting here early to avoid waiting for a table.

  9. H

    Hotel Pan American

The restaurant at this venerable hotel is high on ambience. It has highly experienced and polished waiters sporting traditional Mayan regalia. The food (Guatemalan, Italian and American) is fine, although it is a little on the expensive side.

  10. Food Stalls

Quetzaltenango has a good selection of places to eat in all price ranges. Cheapest are the food stalls in and around the small market to the left of the Casa de la Cultura, where snacks and main-course plates are sold for around US$1 or less.

  12. I

    El Sereno

Another of Antigua's beautiful courtyard restaurants, this one offers a careful blend of Asian, Italian and Guatemalan influences. There's a full bar inside, but outside is the place to be for lunch, under the shade of two big trees.

  13. J

    Rincon Uruguayo

Given that the concepts of ‘big' and ‘juicy' are so rarely applied to Guatemalan steak, this outdoor eatery comes as a relief. Chorizo, barbecue chicken and chivitos (steak sandwiches) are also available.

  14. K

    Jardín Bavaria

This is a bar-restaurant with a verdant patio and spacious roof terrace, offering a mixed Guatemalan-German menu including buffalo steak and suckling pig. There's a good range of beers and the Sunday buffet lunches are tasty.

  15. L

    Casa Babylon

With the widest menu in town, the Babylon is a travelers' favorite. Dishes run from big, tasty sandwiches to Guatemalan classics such as pepian, to more exotic fare such as fondue and Middle Eastern choices.

  16. M

    Café-Restaurante Hamburgo

This bustling spot facing the south side of Parque Concordia serves good Guatemalan food, with chefs at work along one side and orange-aproned waitresses scurrying about. At weekends a marimba band adds atmosphere.

  17. N

    Restaurante Don Rodrigo

The food's up to scratch here - lots of meat and seafood with light Guatemalan twists. The real draw is the setting, a gorgeous courtyard with plenty of wrought iron, blossoming flowers and tinkling fountains.

  18. O

    La Chapinita

Down-home Guatemalan food served in more or less formal surrounds can be hard to come by in Zona 10, but this place does it well at good prices. Tables out front on the shady terrace are cool and breezy.

  19. P

    Los Cofrades

This bright upstairs restaurant (enter from 6a Calle) serves up some excellent set meals and has a decent drinks list. Go for a table out on the balcony - the atmosphere inside is very 'dining hall.'

  20. Q

    Tu Café

The plato vegetariano here is soup, rice, beans, cheese, salad and tortillas, for a reasonable around US$4. Add lomito (a pork fillet) and it becomes a plato típico.

  21. R

    Restaurante Bahía Azul

The Bahía's central location, happy decor and good fresh food keep it popular. The menu's wide, with a good mix of Caribbean, Guatemalan and Asian influences. It opens early for breakfast.

  23. S

    Casa Antigua

An excellent, tranquil spot right in the middle of downtown. Sandwiches are big, chunky affairs and there's plenty of steaks flame-grilling out front.

  24. T

    Blue Angel Video Café

Economical café with excellent, healthy Guatemalan & Latin American food and an awesome tea selection - popular with language students.

  25. U

    Welten

Despite some very snooty service, this is an enjoyable restaurant, lovingly decorated and serving up some of Antigua's more imaginative dishes.

A few steps from the Parque Central, this clean, reliable place serves varied Guatemalan and international fare including good-value pizzas.

For a more down-to-earth dining experience, check out this local eatery, with good pastas (around US$4) and hit-and-miss pizzas (US$5).
