Hello all. I am new to Thorn Tree, but have thoroughly appreciated the posts that currently exist. I have adjusted my itinerary already based on the very helpful information in other posts, but because my husband and I are traveling with an infant - and this is our first time visiting both Guatemala and Belize - I thought it was worth it to post my current planned itinerary and ask for feedback. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful advice!
We are flying in and out of Guatemala City. We are…
Fuego put on a magnificent display last night, shooting lava into the night sky for nearly three hours, creating rapidly moving rivers of lava, and large glowing lava balls running down the sides. Started about 7:30 or so. The weather gods held off the clouds and rain so they couldn't interfere with the visibility. We sat on the rooftop terrace with some wine and snacks and watched the show. That's the first time I've seen it shooting lava. Don't know all the volcano's habits, but I'm going to…
Thinking of bringing a couple thousand U.S. cash into Guatemala on my flight from Texas. I read that I am allowed to take up to $10,000 out of the U.S. But will they pull me aside for questioning? Don't want any delay to cause me to miss my flight.
Any restrictions or problems with Guatemalan customs for bringing a couple thousand cash into the country?
Do Antigua banks readily accept U.S.$100 bills?
You know ceramic 'money faced god' '2 headed serpent' 'chicken bus'. Several years ago in Guate walking south along ave 7? about 4 blocks from a major plaza I came across a store that stocked lots of these. I didn't go in telling myself I would go back later. Never happened. Anyway later with all the market and souvenier stores in Antigua and Pana I never saw another figurine. Why not? I think it would be a huge seller to tourists. I also know I spelled souvenier wrong but don't know how.
We're doing a 3 week trip in November, flying into G'mala City and home from Cancun. Couple, around 40, done plenty of backpacking in the past. She is fluent in Spanish. I get by.
Interests - I really love jungle trekking and really fancy the full 6 day El Mirador trek. She loves beaches!
Happy to do long bus journeys, but will pay more to do them as nicely as possible, and can't be bothered with overnight journeys any more (seen it, done it, value sleep).
Would really value feedback on…
We (couple, 40 & 60) are planning 40 days in CA next April/May.
We don't feel the need to see as much as possible in the shortest amount of time- we are on holiday and like to stop and smell the roses, favouring quality experiences over quantity. We like culture, scenery, art and handicrafts, good coffee and food. We don't surf, dive or party.
Budget is not the most critical thing we can spend were we need to and save when we can.
While we appreciate the merit of "winging it" we generally…
Flight arrives 6:30 AM from LAX. I might be arriving Sunday morning. Would my travel options be the same. I want to stay at Hotel Utz Jay and they are booked midweek so I am shifting travel plans from Guate/Antigua/Panajachel to Panajachel first.
I'm planning a trip to Mexico and Guatemala this Dec/Jan. Originally I was planning to avoid the crowds around Christmas/New Year's but now I'm wondering whether there are any particular places in Mexico or Guatemala I should check out for cool cultural festivities. Right now I'm leaning towards Christmas in Antigua and New Year's around Lake Atitlan. Thanks!
