The Casa Santo Domingo, with its extensive gardens and its own gallerys and museums, is the most gorgeous big hotel in Antigua, a town known for its gorgeous hotels. Just so you know what you're dealing with here...

Set in what used to be a monastery (constructed in 1495), the Santa Domingo has huge grounds, and packs in 126 rooms without the feeling of being cramped. Many of the walls of the main building are from the original monastery, and the place has an enchanting air of crumbling colonialism mixed with ultra-modern luxury. The rooms are everything you would expect at this level - offering comfort, space, high-speed Internet, fireplaces and decent bathtubs. The ivy-covered grounds are well worth exploring even if you're not staying here - they boast no fewer than four museums and art galleries, along with wax and pottery workshops, all gorgeously dotted among ruined walls, tinkling fountains and toucan-filled trees.
