Is is best to book in advance or last minute - discuss!

I'd always recommend booking your scheduled airline flights as way in advance as possible - the closer to the travel date the more expensive they tend to be.

If it is a "package holiday" that you are after then as long as you're not completely set on a particular hotel/resort, you'll normally save yourself a lot of money by booking last minute.

earthcircler This is usually true, but there are always exceptions to the rule. During shoulder seasons airlines often substantially drop rates when they need butts in seats. Also, some airlines open up award seats close to departure dates, giving you a better crack at burning your frequent flyer miles for the trip.

dphrph I try to book as far ahead as I can (depending on the destination..foreign vs. domestic etc). If I'm going to another country then I tend to use the time after I've booked to research and put my trip together.

However, I've also flown at the last minute on a really good fare domestically (I live in the USA) and had a good time seeing a city that I'd not been too before. So both methods have their benefits and drawbacks.
