Hi there I am planning to go to Ecuador and Costa rica next year for 3 months - probably a month in Ecuador and 2 months in Costa Rica. I have a couple of ideas about where I'd like to go, and would like to spend most of my time volunteering (conservation) Just wondering if anyone has been to either of these places before and could reccomend top places to go?
Thanks pals,

abm1988 I have been to Costa Rica and I can recommend Puerto Jiminez on the South West coast. I heard they do not do direct flights to there anymore but you can travel by bus from San Jose. It is barely populated, besides a few expensive holiday homes along the coast line that were not occupied the 3 weeks I was there last May. Osa penisula is the place to go and stay in Encarta La Vida if you can. An amazing lodge with tree houses everywhere, right across from the beach. And go to Corcovado National Park Amazing!

four_winds Yes, I agree with abm1988. The Osa peninsula is considered the ecotourism hub in all of Central America. If you have a green thumb, then this is where you belong.

shrimponthebarbie i volunteered in CR for 3 months; Finca de La Flor de Paraiso: amazing organic farm, genuine locals, great education about environment for local kids, just outside of Cartago, $20/night- look them up. in Puerto Viejo, there's an older american couple that help the indigenous Bribri, and run "The Bridge" soup kitchen/educational programs, they'll let you stay with them. and Puerto jimenez is a wonderful town! good place to volunteer is with the school Nueva Hoja, a school family may even house you for free. or Amigos de Osa does research with sea turtles; you're living IN the rainforest- wake up to howler monkeys!
