Get the best hotel rooms
I always email the hotel that I am staying at to let them know that the reservation is for a special occasion. I always ask if they have a "special room" that they can allocate to me prior to my arrival. If you have the patience it's also worth asking to check a couple of rooms once you've arrived just to make sure you've got the best one.

earthcircler But keep your special occasions straight! I recently brightly announced at checkin that it was my birthday, and the agent outsmarted me by reminding me that it was my anniversary too (recorded from a previous visit). Luckily got a laugh and an upgrade!
