1000dayholiday- have you taken a look at couchsurfing.com? I just joined and haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet, but there are many people all around the world willing to host travellers on their couches. It looks like an incredible way to meet people and get to know the places you are travelling (I think it would also help you with your budget in more pricey areas).

Are you and your family taking off for a year? Going on sabbatical? Maybe hitting the road in an RV and not looking back? Our family is embarking on a year-long adventure around the world, "roadschooling" our kids and challenging ourselves by living outside our comfort zone. We would like to connect with similar families along the way, in this group and perhaps in person at some of our destinations. Join us to network and share advice about destinations, family life on the road, roadschooling and recommended reading.

sarahlavendersmith I agree ... but have you used couchsurfing as a family? I'm not sure whether 1000dayholiday is traveling with children or only as a couple. I'd be interested in couchsurfing if traveling solo or just with husband, but not with children.
mferrer We haven't yet, but there is a sub-group in couchsurfing of families willing to host other families. We are planning on trying it out a few times during our year. I'll let you know how it goes.
arehm We've used couchsurfing several times on our trip so far (10 months now). They have a sub category for families. Every experience was great. We've also hosted a few folks before we left.
You can find out a lot of information about the person and their home before requesting housing (if you'd have a separate room, what others said about them, etc.).
