hey - i've just been to north africa - loosely attached to a group (for the visa thing) - but doing my own thing most of the time. The main thing that differed from a trip I made earlier this year is that I now know some arabic! i've been doing a class for the last few months and can now read it, say and understand some simple stuff, and generally make the effort - the response was fantastic - even though the version i've been learning was very different to the dialect on the ground. I decided on Arabic as for the next two years i am focussing on North Africa and the Middle East as travel destinations (I've brushed up my french too as so many countries in these areas were French colonies and many people still have french as one of the languages they know - and yes colonial languages can be an issue - but hey - where there are people there are politics.)

I've also learnt to read the cyrillic alphabet as i will go to central asia next summer - and thought it would be good to at lea...

hi all. does anyone know any trekking/camping/hiking groups for 20/30 somethings on a shoestring-ish budget, that travel to places like central/south america, asia or southern US?....by shoestring i mean, not 5,000 clams USD like i have seen in my searches. ;) a group specifically for the artistically inclined would be even better!

mirsantana Hey, how's it going... on my last trip i went to Oaxaca Mexico for day of the dead.... i went last year as well but i went with a boyfriend i had at the time... and it was our 1st time traveling together...after our 3 weeks in mexico...we set off in jan. on our around the world trip that didn't last to long i ended up coming home 5 months early...haha i only lasted a month.... but anyways this year i said i wanted to experience Oaxaca on my own ....and i did just that i booked a dorm room at a hostel, and i was set. but b4 i headed out i posted a few post on couchsurfing.com on a few different travel companions groups and i got a few hits from others that were going to be traveling to Oaxaca or in mexico...and that worked really well... i agreed to meet up with some people... of course seeing as how dead of the dead is huge in oaxaca do to so many things to see and do ... i wasn't able to meet up w/some of the people i had talked to on couchsurffing...

mirsantana but i met most of the people i hung out with at my hostel and it was great... just because since i wasn't traveling with them...i DIDN'T HAVE TO eat lunch w/them... or go on a day trip with them.... if we wanted to hang out or meet up we'd agree to something.... and i loved that about traveling alone... because when you travel with a friend it takes more work to agree on stuff... i found it to really liberating and it totally built my confidence as well.

i think i would have been just fine even if i hadn't posted anything on couchsurfing.com and also when you travel alone it forces you to be more social and that's how you meet amazing people :)

mirsantana oh also i think it's great ur going to be volunteering while you travel... i had planed to do that while in oaxaca but....we lets just say there was one to many festas :)

and as far as not being able to make decisions trust me you'll do just fine i'm the same way but i found that if i didn't JUST IT then i might as well be sitting at home plus people that you meet might help with some decision making :)

So I'm a bit nervous about traveling solo like most of you. Any good stories to put me at ease?

    • 27x27

cjohnson627 Hell ya dude. I I have had both good and bad experiences but the best piece of advice i could offer is to ALWAYS sleep in dorms. A single can get lonely and it can be hard to connect with others when the only place there is to sit down is a bed. Also dont be afraid to invite others along on a days itinerary... and dont be afraid to change your own if someone you meet is doing something interesting!

I'm planning / hoping to go travelling in April/May next year, but can't decide where to go at the moment. Any suggestions? As this will be my first time alone, I want to go for a max of 3 weeks to see what it's like, as I'm a bit nervous.

cjohnson627 As cliche as it can be i think that asia is definately the easiest place to meet individuals travellers. If this is your first travel alone experience you may want to skip the harsher travel climates of Cambodia and India and go for a road more travelled like Vietnam and Thailand. Just because lots of people go to these places does not mean that you will not enjoy it.
