Hi everybody! I am a german expat living in Malaysia for more than 3 years now. I like it here and decided to stay, maybe forever? One of my hobbies is writing, so I wrote some books about the expat life in Malaysia, as well as others. Have a look at my profile.

Where am I from? Well, that's kind of hard to answer. I'm American but currently living and working in Amman, Jordan. Past expat residencies have included Libya, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Syria.... the first three with kids of varying ages who hated the experience at the time but later recanted and expressed disappointment with the shallowness of relationships in their home country. Being expats gives us all unique perspectives on life and what's really important in life, n'est-ce pas?

aprilreding Hi! I'm a Canadian living in Syria. I agree that being an expat does put things in perspective. How long are you there for? I'm here for good if all goes well.

I've been living in Costa Rica for the past 2 years. There are pluses and minuses... hey it's life. I prefer living somewhere about 3 months, learning the basics from neighbors and all and then moving on to another spot. House-sitting is a good way to do that. Short term rentals also work. I've spent the past year in an Indigenous Village near Palmar Norte - VERY enlightening - especially since I didn't know any spanish when I showed up! Ya, I got stories!

    Hi,
I am new here. I am Cypriot, but have been living in Greece the last 35 years. I teach English, and my hobbies are Travelling,Photograhy, and I am a professional guide writer. I am on TravelPod, the Top Local Expert there for the last 4 or 5 months, and the Local Expert of Greece and Cyprus. I am a moderator as well, and I have travelled to more than 30 counties worldwide, - planning to double them in the coming years. I tried to join the Blogsherpa but I was denied. I am so disappointed!!! Anyone who wishes to get in touch with me can do so on http://www.travelpod.com/members/greekcypriot

ps. I will appreciate any help given to me, advise, or tips on how to join Blogsherpa and be accepted. You can also send me a private message through TravelPod.

Anyong! I am currently in South Korea teaching, and traveling. It's been great keeping a blog about this adventure where I can track all those moments things seemed hopeless, and all of my "aha" moments when I feel like I am getting the hang of expat life. I also really enjoy all of your witty stories about some of the same stuff we all face.

I'm an American who has been living and working in Moscow, Russia for the last six years, I just got fed up with democrats blaming republicans blaming democrats and nothing gets done to solve the problems in the US. I have a blog I've just started about my life here, my work, what I do in my free time and the sites to see in Moscow that are pretty much unknown in the western world. If your interested you can find my blog here: http://jondayres.blogspot.com/

I currently live in the usa(california), but making plans to move outside the country. I have travelled abroad before and I was trying decide which country to live in. I really liked Greece(Cretan Island), my father is from there. I also was fond of Venezuela; Merida was really nice. Also was fascinated with Nicaragua and its history. If anyone has any suggestions out there, please pass it along. Looking for a place that is not overrun with tourist; a quiet place where I can pursue my passion, writing. Thanks OUT_BOUND

    Homesickness

Do you ever get homesick for the place you came from? How do you deal with it?

    • 27x27

asalvesen I grew up in the States, and when I spent several months in France, I loved it but did miss home. I tried dealing with specific issues, specific things I missed, like food and then tackling them one at a time (going to an American restaurant, finding a store that sold U.S. food products).

What I would do now if I were in the same situation would be to host people from the U.S. I would find these guests by using Tripping.com.

aprilreding Yes! I do get homesick... I find it's good just to feel homesick and then it recedes... I think it has to run its course.

    Going back!

How do you all feel about going back? Personally I love going home on holidays, but I also feel like I've changed in ways that it's hard for my family and old friends to relate to, and after a week or two I'm quite happy to leave again for my "other country" and my expat life. It's weird to think about never moving back, but it's also weird to think about moving back!

    • 27x27

remelila I both love it and hate it. Whenever I go back it's a thrill to be physically walking around NYC again, but then it's a mad rush to try to fit in time to see all my family and friends, and so much has changed since my last visit that I feel like a tourist in my own hometown. It's almost upsetting to see that it's been going on living without me (I know, solipsistic much?). It's always a bit of a relief to get home again because I like being in my own bed, but then I miss NYC as soon as I'm back.
