Amsterdam is located in the west of the Netherlands and is the countrys largest city. Also it is of great importance because the city is the capital of the country. If we go a little deeper into the name of the city then there is a concept behind the word "Amsterdam". Basically, the concept is that there is a dam inside the city whose name is "Amstel" and also there is a dam on the river so combining these two words the name of the city popped out as "Amsterdam". During the 12th Century Amsterdam became one of the leading and important ports for trading purposes. During that time the city was well known for the trade of diamonds.http://www.articleshow.com/Travel/holiday-in-amsterdam_1.html

I was born in Birmingham in 1963 and now live in Australia, but never been to London! I had a penpal at Southend and Luton. When I went back to UK in 1999 I only had enough money to visit relatives.....so once the snow has gone and it's warmed up considerably, hubby and I are going to become aquainted with the London and environs - on a budget.
Firstly looking out for accommodation for mature couple. If there are any puppeteer colleagues too(the last time Roy was in London he worked at the Little Angel Puppet Theartre circa 1972 - a lot has probably changed since then!)....Life in Puppetry article at http://www/jewels42.spaces.live.com -

Heathrow Lodge...near Heathrow Airport...
If you are looking for the drop-dead cheapest place to stay in London...consider the Heathrow Lodge... it's out near Heathrow.
It's quite nice enough... in a quaint neighborhood...with two historic old Pubs nearby.
The Lodge is close to terminal 5 on Old Bath Rd...take the 81 bus...or the free 423 bus from bus post # 5 at Terminal 5...and ask to be let off at the first stop - called "the square."
Your undergrond connection from the Lodge is literally in terminal 5....which you get back to on the free bus 423 in front of the Lodge... that returns back to terminal 5... Terminal 5 is actually the nicest terminal...and beats shabby Terminal 4 totally!
Ultra cheap rates at the Lodge... it's used by backpakers and airline personel...Very helpful and friendly staff...
There is a bit of plane noise to deal with in the evening and early morning...but the nights are usually plane free...
And of course you are a bit out of Londo...

British Airways sometimes has good hotel/flight package deals
I went with a friend to London in March 2008. She had found a package for 4 nights hotel in London with the flight that was around $500 American. If two people went, two nights at the hotel were free. Very good deal. The Hotel was nothing to write home about (Royal National) but it wasn't horrible and it was within walking distance of the British Museum and a tube station.
