    Don't Go Back

Part of why I travel so much now is how much of a planning role I got to play as a kid. And that works hand in hand with going to NEW places -- and not just back to Disney World or 'the lake' every summer.

My parents always let me play an active (sometimes lead -- sometimes failing) role as a planner, finding B&Bs, ski resorts and the like for family trips. One wasn't so successful. I wrote about it, and why going to NEW PLACES are the huge family bonder for Travel Savvy Mom today:

Learning to travel is the best education!!

I have been traveling with my boys since they were 3&4. They have learned much more and in better ways than being "locked in" to one place, not to mention they are more calm, and pay better attention to whats around them.
    Way to go robertreid!!!

OK to travel with young ones?

I've learned that a NYC mom's chat group -- not public -- have discussed my recent post of traveling with my four-month-old daughter. Some angrily discussed it. Suggesting that there's too early an age to go on the road. That it's selfish. That there's no point if they don't remember it.

I think that's ultimately the decision of each parent, but I have no reason to believe that there's too early an age to go and see new places and spend time with the family unit. We've refrained from doing 14-hour flights, and I'm not sure I really would want to put my daughter (or my wife and I) through that. We might.

But I CAN say that seeing my daughter kick and laugh as a parade passed her in Philadelphia -- a relatively easy three-hour drive away -- was well worth the trip.

Ice cream discovered in FFrench mountain town

The relative altitude and constant, gentle breeze blowing through the forested valleys of the Cevennes region of France (just north of the Languedoc) keep the summer heat at bay, but there's always the need for ice cream. This is George Hall and I passing a pleasant hour.

The area of the Cevennes around St Jean du Gard is brilliant for dad travellers. There are lots of rivers to swim in - and float down if you're happiest in an inflatable, a steam train to ride on or just gaze open-mouthed at, and few of the crowds that are found in more popular spots.

    Daughter in Gettysburg

Daughter in Gettysburg At five months, my daughter's flown twice, spent July 4th watching a parade in Philadelphia, a trip to Pittsburgh, spending a couple four-day trips at a rental home in New York State's Hudson River Valley AND this shot from the re-enactment of Gettysburg. Lots of beards, too much sun. Had to break from the shade-free battlefield after a couple hours -- I returned solo for the afternoon 'Picketts Charge' where I counted, sadly, only a few 'deaths' in the mass of gunfire.

    Great group idea

    Robert,

Thanks for starting this group. Stay at the boutique places while you can - before they become toddlers and start breaking all of those fancy decorations.

robertreid I think it was one in a hundred. Some B&Bs wouldn't take us.
