Hello folks! My ailing husband and me are going to spend this winter--ca. October 09 till February 10--in Chiang Mai in a furnished accommodation with a live-in nurse/maid. We're experienced travellers but never been to Thailand. Moreover, my husband's weakening condition limits our choices both logistically and financially. We'll appreciate your help in suggesting tips on how to go about it! Any useful link, site or a word of advice will be of great value to us!

Hey everyone :)
I am spending a month in Thailand in July and would love to travel to Chiang Mai and the North. If anyone knows of any good budget or mid range hotels in Chiang Mai please let me know, and any tips on good (and ethical) treks to hilltribe villages would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Air Pollution in Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand: I think it is time for travel websites and guide books to make known the fact that this is a "no go" area in Februay, March and early April due to extreme air pollution! Chiang Mai is now 5 times over the international "danger" level and Mae Hong Son is currently up at 9 times the "danger" level. This is due to totally illegal and unregulated slash and burn. Tourists and longterm expats alike are leaving in droves and heading to the south to escape breathing problems, asthma attacks and lung cancer.
The "mai pen rai" attitude of the government means nothing will be done til tourists start avoiding the area. Then, when it starts to hurt economically, things will begin to improve, we hope! I live about half a mile from Doi Suthep mountain....near enough to see the individual buildings and trees on a clear day. Today, I can't even see the mountain...it has totally disappeared into the smog!

My best day in Thailand was at Dokmai Garden, Chiang Mai
Dear fellow travellers,
I just wish to share my experience at Dokmai Garden, Chiang Mai.
As an amateur naturalist I always go to National Parks and botanical gardens when I go to a new place. In Chiang Mai there are plenty of options, and many superb restaurants. As paintball, elephants and bungy jumping also occur in Europe, I tried to find something uniquely local. I went to Doi Inthanon national park, which is just fantastic, but there is hardly anyone to talk to, and in general the information staff of Thai national parks do not know much. Although I took lovely pictures, I did not have a clue what I saw. So I went to Dokmai Garden, which according to fellow travellers at my hotel is a botanical garden with delicious food.
My tuktuk driver could not read maps and after some confusing phone calls we finally arrived at Dokmai Garden. Already at the parking you realise that this is a very different place. Young t...

captain_bob November is an excellent month for Chiang Mai - rainy season finished but still green and refreshingly mild temps. What price range did you have in mind for accommodation? Take a look at http://www.travelfish.org/accommodation/thailand/northern_thailand/chiang_mai/chiang_mai/all Travelfish listings. I recommend the 3Sis in the 1500b range, Lai Thai for about 750b, and CM Blue House and Chiang Mai Bow House both around 300-400b.

sophie23 We just spent two weeks in Chiang Mai, last year we stayed at the Blue House...the fan didn't work, bed bugs and it was noisy. The last two years our place of choice has been Mountain View, inside the moat, across from Chiang Puak Gate. Clean, friendly, cheap, good restaurant, with a roof top terrace, plus if you like street food the best night carts are across the street, most of the locals seem to gather here so you know it is great. All of the sawngtheaws and tuktuks also know of mountain view so its easy to get there from any part of the city. Rooms start at 200 to 250 (prices as of Aug09) ask for the rooms off the street or over looking the garden; not on the street side as those are often noisier.

eladi Elephant Nature Park is a unique project set in Northern Thailand. Established in the 1990's our aim has always been to provide a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. The park is set in Chiang Mai province, some 60km from the city, and has provided a sanctuary for over 34 distressed elephants from all over Thailand. Set in a natural valley, bordered by a river, and surrounded by forested mountains the area offers a timeless glimpse of rural life

Discussion group for Chiang Mai accommodation, food, travel, recreation, activities. Places to go & things to see in northern Thailand.
Since this is a beta effort at the moment and the features are very limited (no links, formatting, editing) I'm just having a play. Cheers and look forward to your comments.
