Hi all - Merry Christmas! I'm planning on a 1 month surfing sabbatical end Jan through late Feb 2010. I've never tried surfing but am a good swimmer and have previously done bodyboarding and wakeboarding so I think I'll be fine :)

I'm currently based in Shanghai and am toying with the usual suspects eg. Hawaii, Bali. However, if anyone's got a better suggestion/itinerary for a beginner surfer, for 3 weeks, I'd love to hear from you.

    Thanks! x

Hi Guys, just joined the site and i adore great beaches, i love the pictures posted on here and look forward to seeing more. I have a few favorites on the island of EXuma in the Bahamas, I spent 6 weeks chilling out and getting away from the sounds of the hustle and bustle of real life.I found many beaches where there was no one at all, the trouble was that on one occassion the hired car got stuck down an unmade road on the way to a beach called coco plum, however i went to the road and a truck stopped and helped me get it out, the people on this island accepted me as a local, I rented a beach House(shed) that although basic, was clean and in a beutiful location. This island should not get to spoilt, there is something called family land and also the land given after emacipation, this can never be sold. I have seen very little developement although i see that Sandles are opening a resort there. I look forward to hearing and reading other posts.

Probably, my kind of perfect beach is one that has powdery sand, pristine relaxing waters, great view, and tranquility. Another beach I have in mind, which I can consider as a perfect beach, is the one at Matukad Island in Caramoan, Camarines Sur, Philippines.

I went last week to Coron, an island in the Philippine province of Palawan. There are many beautiful beaches. One of my favorites is the Black Island which has a powdery white beach, clear waters, and rich marine life.

This group is for people who spend their travels searching for the mighty finest beaches of the world. Whether you do it consiously or you've only just realised by reading this that everytime you decide where to go next, in the back of your mind you are thinking about white sand/aqua waters/sandy coves/fine surf/stunning cliffs/palm trees, then this group is for you. Share pics and experiences and get inspired about all the millions of beaches we have yet to factor into our quests that others may rate the highest! Also interested to hear your criteria for a perfect beach - is it secludedness, is it finess/whiteness of sand (or yellowness/blackness/pebbliness) or rocky outcrops, or caves, or surf, or the party scene, or the sunsets, safety, rockpools - or is the very finest beach a mixture of all of those? All important questions!
