California Beers
I moved to California one year ago (from Norway), and I was surprised to see the endless selection of beer that almost every bar and pub has. There are soo many amazing ales. I can't even say which one is my favorite, because I still am trying a new one each time I go out.
However, the point is: California opened my eyes for other beer than the traditional lager.. Which I would not have expected. I thought everybody drinks Bud Light over here, but I was wrong..

jamesflorence Sierra Nevada is rather nice, an odd cross between larger and ale, served cold. I can't drink much of it though, for some reason starts to taste a bit unpleasent after a couple...
gabe_ I highly recommend Anchor Steam from San Francisco, preferably from a tap, in a cold glass. Their Liberty Ale is also good.
nog_boinb not holding out much hope here, but anyone know where a gal living in Melbourne, Australia might find a bottle of Sierra or Anchor Steam?
gabe_ Anchor is a regional beer with an odd brewing process that means it doesn't travel well.... but you should be able to find Sierra Nevada somewhere.
I'll be in Melbourne for a couple of days the first week in October, what local beers should we drink there?
toasty I agree, California makes beer on par with it's wine. I'm gonna throw Arrogant Bastard (from San Diego) and Boont Amber Ale (from Anderson Valley) out there. Just delicious!!
nog_boinb ooh, boont amber! i forgot about that. gabe, you should try mountain goat hightail ale and pale ale, hargreaves hill pale ale (and if you go to their brewery, their extra special bitter, which they don't bottle), fat yak (which is now on tap everywhere) and anything by holgate hill (a visit to their brewery in woodend - you can get there by train - is worthwhile if you have spare time). enjoy! we have GREAT beer.
drifting_adam Nog - you have a fine list of Victorian brews! Worth mentioning that you can visit the Mountain Goat brewery (in Richmond) on a Friday night for a few beers. They put on specialty beers on tap unavailable elsewhere, and you can get their rather tasty Surefoot Stout.
As far as specialty beers, you can try Grain & Grape (a home brew store) in Footscray - I think they import their own stuff. Otherwise Dan Murphy's (liquor store) might have some...maybe..
nog_boinb adam - grain and grape, great suggestion, just around the corner from my house (and can't believe i didn't thinki of it myself).
