The best food by far in North America has to be on Canadian North. They fly to the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. No plastic here! Every meal is served on real plates and with heavy cutlery. I've enjoyed Caribou steaks and Muskox stew as well as more 'traditional' type food such as omelets for breakfast. Oh, and did I mention the free wine with dinner? There is no 1st class on this airline, but in my book everyone is treated as if they were. If you have the chance to go to the arctic this is the airline to do it with!

    Top 3 airline meal experiences

Here's my top 3 most memorable airline meal experiences...

3 - A coconut cake they used to serve around 2 years ago on Qantas Domestic flights. So moist and delicious. A hearty (but not uncomfortably large) portion size. I was travelling for business at the time and I would live for that cake each week!

2 - Meals enjoyed when already a little tipsy ... lets face it, a couple of mid flight wines definitely make the foil wrapped parcels seem a whole lot more interesting.

1 - Top class treatment on a economy flight with Lauder Air... white linen, real cutlery, fresh baked sourdough bread rolls, real butter... the meal I can not even remember , it was the quality touches surrounding it that make this my number one memory.

    Got one to share?

eeker Ok, I just worked out that I needed to join the group to comment, and that to join the group I needed to go back to the group overview page. Riiiiight...

Not so much a meal, but on our honeymoon flight my new wife and I chanced to sit beside an 85 year old Oklahoman lady who was travelling the world with her 79 year old best friend. After their husbands died they decided they would pursue their love of travelling full time until struck down by God.

She was pretty fond of the airline coffee, but had a terrible time with the little transparent plastic wrappers that the biscuits come in. I offered to help when she resorted to taking her teeth to the packet. "Oh no thank-you, dear. You can't let them beat you, you know!"

      Bad-ass.

Quantity AND Quality.........the best MAY be gone......RIP

Quantity first - In the days when Ansett were still alive and doing their international flights, they had awesome food service. Sure their food may not rate as the best in the biz but they certainly made up for it in regularity and quantity. On long haul flights in between the normal meal services, if you had just one eye half open after rousing from a chin slobbering sleep/daze, they would bombard you with ice-creams and chocolate bars, beers and wines, fruit, nuts, chippies and more! It was relentless. In fact they seemed to have an endless supply of tempters on offer and were so regular that I suspect there was bets as to which staff could start a barf bag chain reaction first......the prize for the winner would be to watch their colleagues clean up the aftermath.

Quality next - Once there was a young Austrian fella called Niki who aside from having what seemed a girls name, proved he had big kahuna's by winning the F...

katmar33 Oh I flew Lauder air too and I completely agree with you! It was the best airline food I have ever eaten. Also I remember proper cutlery, cloth napkins and fresh bread rolls (before they became de rigueur on long hall flights) in economy... no skimping. I also remember they served a delicious Austrian herbal soft drink called Almdudler ... kind of like ginger beer and surprisingly refreshing as a twist on scotch and dry.

chocol8 Absolutely!......you almost felt like you were in first class when it came to food service. I was excited at real cutlery back then. I don't remember getting the Almdudler but it does sound familiar. My most vivid memory of the food was the chocolate mousse.....heavenly.

    airplane food fan

I flew Sydney to New York with Air Tahiti Nui and the food was excellent. Hot, fresh (as fresh as a tray of foil covered food can be) and plenty of service when it came to menu options, extra rolls and topping up of your glass. Oh, and the bubbly is french (Moet, no less).

Overall however, I'm yet to meet a mid-air breakfast egg dish I've truly enjoyed on any airline. rubber. The day any of them manage to serve good old hot toast will be a thankful one.

    Etihad

I just flew return on Etihad's express direct service from Abu Dhabi to Sydney and back, and despite it being 14hr 15min /14hr 50 mins legs, they only serve one real meal (As far as plane food goes I guess) and one light meal.

    Talk about getting jipped...

    • 27x27

katmar33 Yes it is true, I recently flew the same Etihad service. Though I think I recall a breakfast involved too. When you are like me on a plane, you basically measure the hours through movies and meals...less meals certainly make for a very boring flight!

yakkalot "Oh wow.. I only just read this. One real meal for 14 hours? Torture flight indeed." It was one 'full' meal (crappy too) and one 'light' meal which was a miniature bread roll, a mini 'fruit dish' with a slice of orange, slice of apple and slice of kiwi and a coffee or OJ.
Pretty average even by modern standards.

    Underage Drinkers

My friend was flying to New Zealand with a SCREAMING toddler. This child filled the air with his screams, without ceasing. The only breaks in transmission were for intake of breath. Every now and again she would hide in the toilet with him. After a while in there, hostesses would come and knock on the door to make sure she was not flushing the screaming child down the crapper. After what seemed like an age, the hostess asked if she needed a drink. Damn right she did.Gin and Tonic, heavy on the Gin, and just wave the tonic nearby. The hostess brought a double G&T. The child GRABBED THE G&T AND TIPPED IT DOWN HIS THROAT. All of it. He went to sleep almost instantly, and woke up in Auckland with no ill effects.

Why are Qantas ice creams so hard?

I love the Qantas ice cream deserts, Mini Magnums are just such a brilliant treat, but why are they so darn cold?

When they serve them they're always rock hard, I always wait ten minutes before biting in - avoid a mile high dental disaster - but those ten minutes are torturous. Turn the freezer down Qantas!

    • 27x27

nthorpe I think they pack them in dry ice. They seem to stored close to absolute zero!

steveomac I was thinking maybe they just dangle them outside the airplane - its pretty cold at 30,000 feet!

    Technically this is "bus food"

Technically this is "bus food" Checkout this delicious meal served up on one of Argentina's renowned long haul busliners! Did I mention they served champagne on arrival and the seats are akin to those you'd typically find in first class at 10,000 feet. In Argentina - the buses are the only way to fly!

    • 27x27

katmar33 Wow that sounds fabulous. Begs the question ... why don't all long hall buses serve champers? It would make long haul road trips much more civilized. (But then again...depending on the quantities ... maybe not!)

is this the end of the endless airplane food schedules?

Did anyone see the article that 'avoiding food may beat jetlag'? Part of a Harvard study that your feeding clock overrides your master clock (in your body - to state the obvious). That you will stay awake until you find food. What does that mean for airplane food?

    • 27x27

katmar33 Personally I would prefer jetlag to risking myself for hours on a flight with a few hundred other grumpy, hungry people on a near maniacal sugar low ;)

blitzpop i followed the directions of that Harvard study starting after i landed and it worked. 2 hr flight followed by 10 hr layover followed by 15 hr flight, and no jetlag!

    Butter - your thoughts

On a recent business class flight between Melbourne and Sydney (yeah, not for work....thanks mum!!) I was pleasantly delighted to be served Lurpak butter with my slightly stale sweet bread roll. Ahh pure buttery pleasure. (http://www.lurpak.com/ the queen of butters).

    thai airways

In defence of good (or, at least, generally edible) economy class food, Thai Airways provides a printed menu before takeoff, hot rolls, flight attendants who wander the aisles to top off your wine, after-dinner coffee service, and here's my favourite part - a final pass through the cabin serving cognac. And it's not just cheap cognac, it's entirely drinkable and reasonably pricy courvoisier VSOP exclusif.

    • 27x27

katmar33 Hello Thai airways! That sounds fantastic. Maybe Hugh Hefner is a shareholder. Did they provide a mini smoking jacket to wear with your complementary slippers?

dansurfie Yes the food and service are fantastic but as is true with all other Asian airlines the wine except on some flights from Australia is cheap horrible Frenchwine. The asians know their cognac but have no idea about wine. it is a shame. Thai's wine is bad but Singapore airlnes' smells and trastes like vomit"! dorry but that's the way it is-

wanderingken ah, very true, dansurfie. The wine on Thai Airways is horrible french wine. It tastes like watered down grape juice spiked with ethanol.

I'm flying Singapore Airlines next week - and now I'm of two minds - try the wine to confirm it REALLY tastes like vomit, or avoid it completely and ask for cognac straight away?

Foodies on Jetstar flights from Bali beware!

Although I had eaten at about 5pm, by the time we boarded the overnight flight from Bali back to Melbourne, it was midnight and I was suffering from insatiable hunger. As a vegetarian, i knew it wouldn't be long before my meal was served so I waited expectantly as the seatbelt sign was turned off, imagining the weird little dishes that were on their way and praying for the real cheese and biscuits not the fake ones they normally give us veggies. I became increasingly agitated as the first hour passed and there was no sign, no familiar clattering coming from the kitchen area, no tap on the shoulder, nothing. In the end as those around me settled in to sleep, I rang my buzzer, my stomach screaming as I politely asked after my dinner. I was horrified to learn that the only meal served on the flight would be breakfast in 7 hours time!

Appalled, I asked if I could have breakfast now. She reluctantly agreed I could have the cold component,...
