Ionian Islands Sights

Sights in Ionian Islands

  1. Myrtos

One of Greece's best beaches can be found at Myrtos. Pull off the hair-raising stretch of road to admire the white sand and exquisite blue water set between tall limestone cliffs. There are minimal facilities at the beach itself. Be aware that the water here becomes deep quite quickly and there can be a strong undercurrent.

  2. Shipwreck Beach

Photos of the famous Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) grace virtually every tourist brochure about Zakynthos, but when the excursion boats offload hundreds of passengers around noon the charm fades quickly. Avoid the crowds by visiting in the morning or from mid-afternoon, and bring supplies as there are no facilities.

If you can handle heights, be sure to visit the precariously-perched lookout platform over Shipwreck Beach, on the west coast, signposted between Anafronita and Volimes. The view is well worth the adrenaline rush.

  3. Anogi

The crumbling hilltop village of Anogi was once the island's capital; today the main square (and its elderly inhabitants) seem from another era. The restored 12th-century church of Agia Panagia has amazing Byzantine frescoes and a Venetian bell tower. Visit the neighbouring kafeneio (coffee house) and speak to the owner; he is the proud keeper of the keys.

  4. Fountain of Arethousa

There's a lot of hype about the sites connected to Homer's tale, and finding them can be an epic journey (signage is scant). The most renowned site is the Fountain of Arethousa, south of Vathy, where Odysseus' swineherd, Eumaeus, brought his pigs to drink. The isolated, shadeless trek, through unspoilt landscape with great sea views, takes around 3hr return.

  5. Kioni

The pretty little village of Kioni may be one of Ithaki's better-kept secrets. It's draped around a verdant hillside spilling down to a picturesque miniature harbour where yachties congregate. Tavernas, bars and flower-bedecked buildings will have you reaching for your camera. For swimming, seek out the small, pebbly bays between Kioni and Frikes, 4km away.

  6. Archeological Museum

The star exhibit of the archeological museum is the Gorgon Medusa sculpture, one of the best-preserved pieces of Archaic sculpture found in Greece. The petrifying Medusa is depicted in the instant before she was beheaded by Perseus. Note the snake coiffure.
