    Brettos

A Plaka landmark, this quaint bar has a stunning backlit wall of coloured bottles, old wine barrels and an authentic old-fashioned character. It’s a quiet spot for a night- (or day-) cap, with a tempting range of homemade brews to imbibe or take away.

    Grand Café

Perhaps the best regular bar in Thasos (Limenas), the Grand Café has soft corner couches and caters to a mixed Greek/international crowd. In the same area as the town's few nightclubs, it's visible from its checkerboard pillars out the front. Friendly owner Dimitris Dimitriadis insists he was not named after the street on which his bar is located.

    Nipiagogio

One of the first bars to open in Gazi, this popular place in a former kindergarten (as the name in Greek suggests) plays on the children’s toy theme in its décor. Inside it’s one of the liveliest small clubs, while there’s a fantastic courtyard for summer.

    Lathos

This quirky drinking hole is jam-packed with remote-controlled junkyard automata from moving tables to an arm clanging a cymbal. Depending on his mood, the DJ plays a haphazard mix of musical beats - perfect for jiving with your surroundings.

  5. Alexandrino

There’s a quaint French bistro feel to this tiny bar on the emerging dining and bar strip along Benaki. Alexandrino is great for a quiet drink; the service is friendly and you can sit at the narrow bar or at the few tables on the pavement.

  7. Beer Academy

A beer or five in Kalamaria is just what the doctor ordered on an unproductive Thessaloniki afternoon. It takes time, after all, to sample the very substantial offerings at Thessaloniki's trend-setting biraria (beer bar).

    Extra Blatt

For beer lovers who don't want to truck all the way to Kalamaria, this very central bar/restaurant has an impressive range of European and even American beers. The décor is nothing special, but it's the beer that counts.

    Galaxy

Not to be mistaken for the Hilton’s impressive rooftop Galaxy bar, this tiny place in an obscure arcade is a friendly, time-warp type of place where you sit at the bar and get great service and a little meze with each round.

    Hoxton

Since the metro station opened, the drinkers along the Voutadon strip of bars flow into one big throng. Hoxton is one of the most popular bars, with funky industrial design, clashing leather chesterfields and modern art.

    Balux House Project

This cast glass–fronted beach house is an all-day hangout set up as a series of living rooms. The youthful crowd lounges around playing cards, board games or pool, surfing the net, or curled up in a beanbag with a book.

  13. Baja Beach Club

On the old highway east of the town, this massive beach bar is like a tropical paradise with palm trees and bars around a big pool. At night it morphs into a happening club. The turn-off is just before the bridge.

This branch of the popular Thessaloniki watering hole is a welcome alternative to most bars' Greek holy trinity of Amstel, Heineken and Mythos, with over 30 brews representing Boston to Belgium and beyond.

  15. K

    Circus

Right on the border of Kolonaki and Exarhia, Circus has Exarhia’s youthful edge without the grunge and a bit of Kolonaki’s glamour without the pretensions. Most nights there’s a fun vibe and great music.

  19. Paleohora Club

Paleohora Club, next to the campsite, used to be popular for all-night, full-moon parties but is now a less-appealing swanky indoor club. There's a shuttle bus from the port.
