Harmony
Few places take chill-out to the honed level of this great bar. Hammocks, deckchairs and discerning sounds set the pace and kids are well looked after here. It's just along the northern arm of Mylopotas beach. There's live music too, and Tex-Mex food is the main attraction.

- Restaurants › Thai
In the same venue as the restaurant of that name there's another great Ios favourite, this is the place for tasty Thai dishes, including pad thai (thin rice noodles stir-fried with dried shrimp, bean sprouts, tofu and egg) cooked by authentic Thai chefs. The service is very upbeat and there's entertainment. It's on the same street as the Emporiki bank.

Mylopotas Beach
The busiest and most popular beach on Ios used to be littered with people sleeping rough to avoid paying for accommodation. It's still busy and parties still prevail, but sleeping here is no longer allowed. Popular for good reason, the beach is long, sandy and safe, with a good smattering of watersports centres, cafes and places to stay.

Pomodoro
Opened in recent years, this new Ios favourite spreads over two floors. There's a fabulous roof garden with panoramic views. It's just off the main square above Disco 69, and offers authentic wood-fired pizzas as just part of its excellent Italian and Mediterranean menu.

Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum of Ios has displays of ceramics and other artefacts dating back to the days of Roman rule and beyond, found during archaeological digs on the island. It's worth a visit to give you some context for the island, which at first glance has otherwise little reference to its rich history.

Hora Village
Hora (population 1632) is a lovely Cycladic village with myriad laneways and simple houses. It's most charming during daylight hours when the bars are shut and it recaptures the peaceful atmosphere of other island towns. By night, Hora's tiny central square is transformed into a noisy, open-air party.

Drakos Taverna
Enjoy reasonably priced fish dishes (although some species are by the kilogram) at this popular taverna that overlooks the sea at the southern end of the beach. Whatever's on the dish, you get the feeling that it may well have hopped straight from the water into the kitchen and then onto your plate.

Lord Byron
Near the main square, this long-standing favourite is relaxing and intimate and the food is a great fusion of Greek and Italian. Dishes range from shrimp cooked in a tomato sauce with feta and ouzo to penne with a wild mushroom and cream sauce - and it all comes in generous helpings.
