Sights in Folegandros

  1. Hora

The island's capital is the concealed clifftop Hora, one of the Cyclades' most appealing villages. With pretty little churches and a medieval kastro filled with whitewashed houses draped in bougainvillea, the village draws you in to its meandering (traffic-free) main street that drifts happily from leafy square to leafy square. Atmospheric eateries abound.

  2. Ano Meria

Authentic Ano Meria is a scattered community of small farms and traditional dwellings, where tourism makes no intrusive mark. There are several traditional tavernas here, specialising in the local hand-made pasta dish matsada. The folklore museum (open of an evening), on Ano Meria's eastern outskirts, showcases rural life.

  3. Church of the Virgin

From Pounta Sq and the bus turnaround in Hora, a steep, zigzagging path leads up to the large, whitewashed Church of the Virgin (aka Panagia), which sits perched on a dramatic clifftop above the town. The climb to this single-aisled, multi-domed basilica is rewarded with a spectacular view over Hora and the entire island.

  4. Folklore Museum

The settlement of Ano Meria has a traditional island life where tourism makes no intrusive mark and life happily wanders off sideways. The Folklore Museum is on the eastern outskirts of the village. Ask the bus driver to drop you off nearby.
