Amorgos Sights

  1. Agia Anna Beach

Agia Anna Beach is the nearest beach to both Katapola and Hora, and is where The Big Blue was filmed. The beach is actually a series of small pebbly coves strung out along the rocky shoreline, which can get really busy in summer. There's a small cantina next to the car park on the cliff-top, selling food and drinks.

  2. Katapola

Katapola is a pleasant place that straggles along the curving shoreline of a dramatic bay in the most verdant part of the island. Remains from the ancient Cretan city of Minoa, as well as a Mycenaean cemetery, lie above the port and can be reached by a steep uphill walk. Places to stay and eat as well as basic amenities can be found here.

  3. Monastery of Hozoviotissis

An unforgettable sight, as much for the spectacular scenery as for the 11th-century monastery (moni) itself. The dazzling white building clings precariously to a cliff-face above the east coast. A few monks still live here and tours are sporadic but worthwhile. Modest dress is required (long trousers for men, a long skirt and covered shoulders for women).

  4. Moni Hozoviotissis

Amorgos is defined by the iconic Moni Hozoviotissis , a dazzling white building embedded in an awesome cliff face high above the sea. It lies on the precipitous east coast below Hora. A few monks still live here and short tours, which usually end with a pleasant chat with one of the monks, take place sporadically, usually when a reasonable number of visitors have gathered at the door of the monastery. The tour is free but donations are appreciated.
