Beach sights in Crete

  1. Ammoudara Beach

Ammoudara Beach, 3km from town, is a little better thank the town beaches and supports a fairly busy restaurant and accommodation scene.

  2. Agia Roumeli Beach

The gorge ends at the 12.5km mark just north of the almost abandoned village of Old Agia Roumeli. From here it's a further uninteresting 2km hike to the welcoming seaside resort of Agia Roumeli, with its much- appreciated fine pebble beach and sparkling sea, where most hikers can be seen between after midday taking a refreshing dip or at least bathing sore and aching feet. Be warned, falling rocks can be a hazard and people have been injured, including two fatal incidents in 2006.

On extremely hot days the gorge is closed for safety reasons.

  3. Almyros

The sandy beach at Almyros, about 1km south of town, is the best of the town beaches and tends to be quieter than smallish Ammos or Kytroplatia Beach. It can be reached on foot via a coastal path starting at the end of the road just past the stadium. There's not much shade but you can hire umbrellas.

  4. A

    Venetian Harbour

Rethymno's tiny Venetian harbour is crammed with fish tavernas and cafés fronted by touts, but you can get a better sense of it by walking along the old harbour walls past the fishing boats to the landmark lighthouse, built later by the Turks.

  5. Ierapetra's beaches

The main town beach is near the harbour while a second beach stretches east from the bottom of Patriarhou Metaxaki. Both have coarse, grey sand, but the main beach offers better shade.

  6. Ammoudara

Ammoudara, about 4km west of Iraklio, is the closest beach to the city but you are better off heading further afield to Agia Pelagia in the west, or Koundoura to the east.

  8. Kokkini Ammos

For a less crowded beach, head to Kokkini Ammos. It's about a 30-minute scramble south over the rocks and attracts a smattering of nudists.
