The owner of the Acrogiali taverna on the main beach also hires out canoes and pedal boats and can arrange for waterskiing.
From late May to September, the owner of the Faros taverna also runs daily cruises to Preveli Beach (€25) and the deserted offshore island of Paximadia (€30, including small lunch). Departures depend on weather conditions. For enquiries, stop by the taverna the night before or go to the port around 10am.
Striking architecture and steeply terraced vineyards on the slopes of the Orthi Petra hill characterise this state-of-the-art boutique winery in Plouti, about 7km south of Zaros. The tasting room with views out to sea is a nice spot for sampling its fine wines, including the award-winning white Vidiano and red Orthi Petra Syrah-Kotsifali. Guided tours are also available.
Part of the E4 European Path, this gorge leads to the protected Rouvas Forest, home to some of the oldest oak trees in Crete. It’s an especially lovely walk in springtime when orchids, poppies, irises and other wildflowers give the landscape the vibrancy of an Impressionist painting.
