Lonely Planet review for Kanellopoulos Museum

The imposing 1884 mansion on the northern slope of the Acropolis houses the Kanellopoulos family’s extensive collection, donated to the state in 1976. After a major refurbishment and expansion, it was due to open in late 2008. The collection includes jewellery, clay-and-stone vases and figurines, weapons, Byzantine icons, bronzes and objets d’art dating from every period of Greek history.

Well set out, pleasant and interesting

    jhassall recommends this,

This museum was reopened late 2010 after undergoing refurbishment for several years. The climb up via the Plaka area is interesting including through an area of blue and white houses. One can of course stop after the heat of visiting the Acropolis. Most museums in Athens have good A/C systems and clean restrooms and this is one of the better ones.
The collection over a number of areas is spectacular in its own way and the item descriptions are in clear English as well as Greek. A considerable number of the icons are from the Cretan painters and done in great detail. There are many other items some as metal Byzantine castings and a number of stone carvings. One item albeit small that caught my eye was an ancient lead grudge pad with a delightful description of how it was used. This description typified the clarity of many of the item descriptions which went a long way towards making the visit an enjoyable learning experience.
At this stage photographs are not permitted; the reason being I was told that they had not been published.
The staff most spoke reasonable English and were friendly and helpful
