Lonely Planet review

The Philippos is nestled on a quiet street not at all far from Plaka and handy to the Acropolis. It's got a discreet, exclusive feel although it's not the great-value mid-range spot it once was. In fact, in summer, it can feel a little overpriced. Perhaps they missed the Closing Ceremony at the 2004 Olympics? Nevertheless, it remains popular with travellers.

The hotel looks smart, although fashionistas will query the lobby, where rustic hand-painted chests, Italian-style leather sofas, and Scandinavian wooden chairs are curiously juxtaposed. Nicest is the skylit 'atrium area', with flowery benches and a summery feel. The rooms are good, although on the small side. The beds are comfortable but a bigger desk or table would be nice. The bathrooms are good, with power showers. Most have balconies, some with an Acropolis view at no extra cost (the helpful staff will give you one of these if there's one free - unlike most hotels). The single rooms are better, with a big bed to stretch out on. For the romantically inclined, there's one small room on the roof, with a memorable view - great for a honeymoon.
