The slow return to America
Blog: The Adventures of D - 18 November 2010
I arrived to the Zadar airport way too early for my liking. “This is the bus you have to take if you want to get there in time for your flight,” the receptionst at the hostel informed me. It got me there more than three hours before my flight. Maybe there will be something to [...]

Blocks of Light and Shadow: Travel Photo Contest Friday 27
Blog: Todd's Wanderings - 12 November 2010
Update: The winner is Norbert…who guessed the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Germany. Thanks again to Jonny and his fun travel and photography site. Jonny is a man of few words so here is what Wikipedia has to say: “The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (German: Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas), also known as the Holocaust Memorial (German: Holocaust-Mahnmal), is a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold.

Why We Visit Tragic Places
Blog: Landlopers - 9 November 2010
My first, and to date only, visit to Germany was way back in 2003. Scott and I were on vacation touring through Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany. The trip was a great introduction to Central and Eastern Europe and continued to fuel my love...

InterRail memories from before the internet age
Blog: 501 Places - 25 October 2010
I set off on my first InterRail journey in 1987. It was long before the days of blogging, and the few notes that I recorded in a notebook are now long gone. Yet I did recently dig out some of the assorted junk that I’d brought back in my rucksack. At the time I must [...]InterRail memories from before the internet age is a post from: 501 Places

How To Learn a Foreign Language
Blog: As We Travel - 5 October 2010
Learning a new language is a tough challenge while traveling, and it can easily get so overwhelming that you finally just give up. I don’t have a quick fix to learn a language, there are no magic pills.

A quick note about Munich
Blog: See Simi Travel Blog - 27 September 2010
Munich, capital of Bavaria, brought my first experience at a Beer Hall or Hofbrauhaus. It was also the first time that I had ever seen a liter of beer, and so of course I had to order one. I looked ridiculous drinking it in small sips and holding it with two hands. By the time I had finished the one liter stein, the beer was both warm and flat. My stomach was so bloated I thought I would just explore right there and then. I nibbled on a Schweinshaxe (German pork knuckle dish) to help ease the inebriation, and the grease actually helped battle the bloat. Needless to say, it was a great time.

How Not To Enjoy World Travel – Part 2
Blog: Vagobond.com - 24 September 2010
Don't read anything about the country of place you are going to. That way you won't understand the culture, the traditions, the history, the climate, or anything else. You will be able to have a completely one dimensional experience.

Germany: Our last driving hurrah and sausagefest!
Blog: The Amazing Dawdle - 23 September 2010
After Poland, we were excited to return back to Western Europe. We missed the variety of breads, relative safety factor, and our wide breadth of language skills here (the 5 phrases or words we know... like thank you and hello…), and clean bathrooms (OK – so you sometimes have to pay for them), which now means Christy could travel without a wad of TP or Kleenex in her pocket. That being said, we will miss the inexpensive way of life in Eastern Europe… everything simply costs less and so we will discover sticker shock again!

Berlin Gallery
Blog: No Beaten Path - 1 September 2010
‘Poor but sexy’ really is such a great description for Berlin – a bit unkempt and a little dirty, with the shiny parts looking soulless, Berlin feels like a city to live in, not just an ossified, pretty-ed up tourist … Continue reading →

Blog: Inside the Travel Lab - 31 August 2010
