Zoological sights in Germany

  1. A

    Tierpark Hagenbeck

Hamburgers prefer not to call Tierpark Hagenbeck a zoo. That's because its 2500 animals live in very open enclosures over 27 hectares. In addition to elephants, tigers, orang-utans, toucans and other creatures, you'll find a replica Nepalese temple, Japanese garden, art-deco gate and other similar attractions. A petting zoo, pony rides, a miniature railway and playground mean you'll have to drag the kids away at the end of the day.

    Münchener Tierpark Hellabrunn

Around 5000 animals inhabit Munich's 'geo-zoo' (one with distinct sections dividing animals by continents). The Münchener Tierpark Hellabrunn, to the south of the city, was one of the first of its kind. The sprawling, well-maintained grounds are home to rhinos, elephants, deer and gazelles, as well as a special petting zoo, full of cuddly sheep, deer and lambs. To get there take the U3 to Thalkirchen or bus 52 from Marienplatz.

    Grosser Garten

Occupying the former royal hunting grounds, is the aptly named Grosser Garten, an enchanting refuge during the warmer months. A visitor magnet here is the excellent Zoo, where crowds gravitate toward the Africa Hall and the new Tundra exhibit with arctic foxes and snowy owls. At the garden's northwestern corner is the Botanischer Garten (Botanical Garden). From April to October, a fun way to get around the park is aboard a miniature train.

    Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten

Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten is a quirky mix of zoo and botanical gardens. Kid magnets include semi-striped okapis, elephants, penguins and a petting farm with Poitou donkeys. Greenhouses sheltering tree ferns, camellias and Amazonian species are among the botanical highlights. Sniff out the gigantic bloom of the malodorous titan arum in the Moorish Villa.

    Leipzig Zoo

Not your run-of-the-mill zoo, the Leipzig version has lots of rare species, plus perennial crowd-pleasers such as tigers, lions and gorillas. The elephant habitat, built to look like a Cambodian temple, is a highlight. Take tram 12.

  9. Mönchengladbach Zoo

A brilliant day out for kids and adults alike. Founded in 1957, this tiergarten is set on 4.3ha and houses almost 500 animals. Grab a map and follow the paths to the scary beasts and the cuddly critters. Naturally, there is a shop to buy stuffed versions of what you've just seen and a cafeteria to calm your nerves after confronting your big cat fears.
