  1. Grober Unfug

Fans of comics and graphic novels can easily lose a few hours in this very cool repository of books, DVDs, soundtracks and knick-knacks. At street level you’ll find mostly German stuff (including Kai Jacob’s Street Art in Berlin), while upstairs belongs to a mega-selection of indie and mainstream imports from the US, Japan and elsewhere. Also upstairs is a gallery with original drawings. There’s a smaller branch in Mitte (Weinmeisterstrasse 9).

    Hugendubel

This excellent all-purpose chain has a sweeping selection of books, including Lonely Planet titles and novels in English. You can browse as long as you like, or preview your purchase while perched on a comfy sofa, or even while recaffeinating at the in-store café. Other, smaller, branches include Mitte (Friedrichstrasse 83) and Potsdamer Platz (Potsdamer Platz Arkaden).

  3. Hammett

Hard-boiled readers won’t be able to resist snooping around this bookshop, where shelves are packed with classic and contemporary mysteries, and detective and crime stories. Named after one of the genre’s finest, Dashiell Hammett, it also has a good selection of English-language titles, and hundreds of used books. Look out for signings and readings.

    Pro QM

Booklovers in search of weighty coffee-table tomes on design, photography and architecture, pop culture zines or political and philosophical pamphlets with a twist will be in heaven at this stylish bookshop. The quiet, smart surrounds seem especially conducive to immersing oneself in Berlin’s post-something theory scene.

    Saint Georges

Laid-back and low-key, Saint George’s bookshop is a sterling spot to track down new and used Berlin-themed fiction and nonfiction, thanks to the helpful staff. The history section makes for some great dawdling (as do the Chesterfield couches), and you can also hang out here on Tuesday evenings for movie night.

  6. D

    Prinz Eisenherz

The ‘Prince’ is the source in town for gay lit, nonfiction and mags in many different languages, including, of course, English. Since moving to bigger digs, there’s even a respectable lesbian section here, plus videos, DVDs, postcards as well as calendars.
