Things to do in Meissen

  1. Weinschänke Vincenz Richter

The romance factor is high at this top-flight restaurant, despite the rather martial decor (historic guns and armour) and the decidedly unromantic torture chamber (unless you're into S&M, that is). Expect attentive service, expertly prepared regional cuisine and wines from their own estate.

  2. Schloss Taverne

Take a seat on the bench-lined and arcaded inner courtyard, surely Meissen's most atmospheric place to eat, to enjoy goulash, pork chops or Saxon beef joint with dumplings and sauerkraut. Then take it slow with a bottle or two of the region's wine, accompanied by locals on the accordion.

  3. Porzellan-Museum

There's no 'quiet time' to arrive at the understandably popular and utterly unmissable Porzellan-Museum, but it's worth braving the crush (and the waiting) to witness the astonishing artistry and craftsmanship that makes Meissen porcelain truly unique.

  4. Frauenkirche

The Gothic Frauenkirche is the world's oldest made from porcelain; it chimes a different ditty six times daily. Climb the tower for fine red-roof views of the Altstadt.

  5. Zollhof

The flower-festooned beer garden with its eccentric fountain is the best place to sample the typical German dishes here, or to try lighter ones officially 'stolen' from Jamie Oliver.

  6. Domkeller

Meissen's oldest restaurant offers good-value local dishes and views from the leafy terrace to satisfy any vista-junkie; the menu's helpfully 'translated' into Saxon.

  7. Dom

Dom is a Gothic masterpiece with medieval stained-glass windows and delicately carved statues in the choir.
