If all goes according to plan – and that's a big IF! – the first S-Bahn trains will finally start rumbling through the new City-Tunnel beneath Leipzig's city centre in December 2013. Part of a masterplan to improve the efficiency of regional railway travel, the tunnel has been under construction since 2005 and will run from the Hauptbahnhof to the Bayerischer Bahnhof 2km south. Among the six new S-Bahn lines will be a direct link between the centre, the trade-fair grounds, the airport and the city of Halle. However, construction has been delayed several times, while the cost has ballooned to just under €1 billion, causing much heated debate and criticism in these times of fiscal belt-tightening.
