There's something comfortably stuffy about this venerable abode behind a stately Art Nouveau facade. It's welcomed visitors since 1911 and now treats guests to updated old-world flair and friendly, unfussy service.

With its chandeliers, frilly window drapes and red velvet sofas, the lobby evokes the ambience of a bygone era, although the rest of the hotel doesn't quite carry the tune. The 101 rooms and suites come in four different comfort levels and decorative styles ranging from floral feminine to jazzy art deco. All are elegant, enlivened with prints of Picasso drawings and endowed with the full gamut of modern trappings. Baths are dressed in white marble and many have windows. Kick off the day with a high-octane breakfast served in the French brasserie, where a cheerful painted-glass mural sets a colourful accent. If hunger strikes at dinnertime, Victor's Stube offers a more rustic alternative with its menu of country-style Saxon and German meals.
